Solar Battery Storage Explained

A home battery is what turns solar from a daytime saving into round-the-clock free energy. Here's how storage works, whether it's worth it, and what it costs.

Key takeaways
  • A battery stores daytime solar so you use it free in the evening.
  • It lifts self-consumption from ~⅓ to well over ⅔ for most homes.
  • Typical cost is £2,500–£5,000 depending on capacity.
  • It can be fitted with your panels or retrofitted later.

What is a Solar Battery?

A solar battery stores the electricity your panels generate during the day so you can use it whenever you need it — most usefully in the evening, when the sun has gone down but your home is using the most power. Without one, surplus daytime solar is exported to the grid for a small payment, and you buy electricity back at a higher price after dark.

How a Home Battery Works

During the day, your panels power your home first; any surplus charges the battery rather than going straight to the grid. In the evening, your home draws on that stored energy instead of buying from the grid. Many batteries can also charge from the grid during cheap off-peak hours, so you store low-cost energy to use during expensive peaks.

The result is that far more of the energy you use is your own — a measure called self-consumption — which is where the savings come from.

Is a Solar Battery Worth it?

For most households, yes. A battery typically lifts the share of your own solar you actually use from around a third to well over two-thirds, which meaningfully cuts your bills and shortens the payback of the whole system. It also gives you back-up options in a power cut and lets you make the most of smart, time-of-use tariffs.

It's most worthwhile if you use a fair amount of electricity in the evenings, have an EV, or are on (or moving to) a time-of-use tariff.

Cost and Sizing

A home battery typically adds £2,500 to £5,000 depending on capacity (usually quoted in kWh). Bigger isn't always better — the right size matches your evening usage so the battery fills and empties each day. Our design team sizes it around your actual consumption, and you can add storage at install or retrofit it to existing panels later.

Frequently asked questions

Your Questions, Answered.

What is a solar battery?

It stores the electricity your panels generate during the day so you can use it later — most usefully in the evening — instead of exporting it cheaply and buying it back at a higher price.

Is a solar battery worth it?

For most homes, yes. It increases how much of your own free solar you use, which lowers bills further and shortens the payback period of the whole system.

How much does a solar battery cost?

Typically £2,500 to £5,000 depending on capacity. It can be added at the time of install or retrofitted later.

Can I add a battery to existing panels?

Yes. A battery can be retrofitted to most existing solar systems, so you can start with panels and add storage when it suits you.
