- Commercial solar cuts business electricity costs and locks in more predictable energy prices for decades.
- You can fund it by outright purchase, finance/lease, or a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with no upfront cost.
- Payback depends on your load profile — using generation on site is worth far more than exporting it.
- On-site solar cuts Scope 2 emissions and may qualify for capital allowances.
Why Businesses Go Solar
For most commercial energy users, electricity is a large and volatile overhead. On-site solar turns unused roof or land into decades of generation you control, cutting the volume you buy from the grid and insulating you from price spikes. Alongside the financial case, it delivers measurable carbon reductions that increasingly matter for tenders, ESG reporting and customer expectations.
What Commercial Solar Costs
There's no single price — a commercial system is scoped to your roof or land, your energy use and your goals. The main cost drivers are system size (kWp), whether you add battery storage, the mounting type (rooftop, ground-mount or car-park canopy) and any grid-connection works. Larger systems generally cost less per kWp than domestic installs, improving the economics at scale.
The most accurate way to size and cost a system is from your half-hourly (HH) consumption data, which shows exactly when you use energy across the day.
PPA Vs Purchase vs Finance
Outright purchase. You fund the system and keep all the savings and generation. This gives the strongest lifetime return and full ownership of the asset.
Finance or lease. You spread the cost over time. If the repayment is lower than the energy you save, you can be better off from day one while still moving toward ownership.
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). A funder pays for and owns the system, and you simply buy the electricity it generates at an agreed rate — usually below grid prices — with no upfront capital. It's a popular route for businesses that want the savings and carbon benefits without the capital outlay.
How Payback Works
Payback is driven less by how much you generate and more by how much of that generation you use on site. Electricity you consume directly displaces expensive grid power; surplus you export earns far less. Businesses with strong daytime demand — warehouses, manufacturing, retail, offices — tend to see the best returns, and battery storage can shift more generation into the hours you actually need it.
A model built on actual half-hourly consumption data can reflect an operation more closely than a generic average. Any payback figure remains a forecast.
ESG & Tax Benefits
Beyond the bill, on-site solar directly reduces your Scope 2 emissions, giving you hard numbers for ESG, SECR and tender responses — supported by live generation reporting. Solar assets may also qualify for capital allowances, letting many businesses offset part of the investment against taxable profits (your accountant will confirm what applies). Pairing solar with commercial EV charging extends the benefit to your fleet and staff parking.

Your Questions, Answered.
How much does commercial solar cost in the UK?
There's no single figure — commercial systems are priced by size (kWp), whether storage is added, mounting type and grid works. Larger systems typically cost less per kWp than domestic ones. The most accurate cost comes from scoping against your half-hourly consumption data.
What is a solar PPA for business?
Under a Power Purchase Agreement, a funder pays for and owns the solar system on your site, and you buy the electricity it generates at an agreed rate — usually below grid prices — with no upfront capital outlay.
How long is the payback on commercial solar?
It depends on your energy use and how much generation you consume on site, but well-scoped commercial systems typically pay back within their early years and then deliver decades of low-cost generation. Payback is built around your real half-hourly data.
Does commercial solar help with ESG reporting?
Yes. On-site generation directly reduces your Scope 2 emissions and provides the generation and carbon-offset figures needed for ESG, SECR and tender submissions, backed by live monitoring.
