Solar Panel Grants & Funding in the UK (2026)
There's no single 'free solar' grant in 2026, but several schemes cut the cost or pay you back — from 0% VAT to ECO4 and export income. Here's what's actually available and how to check what you qualify for.

On this page
- There is no universal "free solar" grant — but 0% VAT and export income cut the real cost for everyone.
- ECO4 can fund solar for lower-income and benefit-receiving households in less efficient homes.
- The Smart Export Guarantee pays you for surplus energy you send back to the grid.
- Scottish homeowners can access interest-free loans via Home Energy Scotland.
0% VAT On Solar and Batteries
Until March 2027, solar panels and home battery storage installed in UK homes are zero-rated for VAT — a straight 20% saving versus standard rate, applied automatically by your installer. It applies to solar fitted on its own and, since early 2024, to batteries added on their own too. You don't need to apply; it's already reflected in your quote.
The ECO4 Scheme
ECO4 (the Energy Company Obligation) requires larger energy suppliers to fund efficiency measures, which can include solar, for eligible households. It is generally aimed at lower-income households, those receiving certain benefits, and less energy-efficient homes (typically EPC band D–G). Funding and availability vary, so eligibility is assessed case by case.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The SEG isn't a grant but it pays you back: licensed energy suppliers must pay for surplus electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier, so it's worth comparing. Our SEG guide explains how it works and how to get the best rate.
Home Energy Scotland Loans
Homeowners in Scotland can apply to Home Energy Scotland for interest-free loans towards solar and battery storage, sometimes with a cashback element. It spreads the cost rather than gifting it, but interest-free finance materially improves the return.
What About the Feed-in Tariff?
The Feed-in Tariff closed to new applicants in 2019 and has been replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee. If you see "FiT" advertised for new installs today, treat it with caution — it's the SEG you'll be signing up to now.
How to Check What You Qualify for
The simplest route is a free quote: we apply the 0% VAT automatically, set up your SEG export, and flag any scheme you may be eligible for based on your home and circumstances — with no obligation.
